Never Too Late – Switching Into the School of Music

Believe it or not, when I first started college I was an architecture major. I had been in band all through high school but I was afraid that majoring in music would make me lose my passion for it. I was always interested in interior design, so I figured this would be a good place to start my journey at OU.

About a week and a half into my first semester, I decided that architecture was not what I wanted to major in. I couldn’t imagine doing that major for 5 years and suddenly I was lost in college. I had been taking private horn lessons with Dr. Reynolds when he offered me a spot in Symphony Band because someone wasn’t able to fulfill their spot. After a few rehearsals, I realized how much I had missed music and decided to make it my major.

Switching my major was nowhere near as difficult as I thought it would be and because I was taking a lot of “gen-ed” courses, I wasn’t too behind when we looked at the credits, I needed to be a Music Education major. I wanted to inform students, prospective and enrolled, that it is never too late to switch into music. If music is something that you truly love and it calls to you above all else, don’t stress! Just contact your advisor and they can help you become a music major!
